This wood originated from a small, sparsely inhabited island off the east coast of New Guinea. Some of these trees grow to enormous dimensions. One of the first logs we received from here was 3 ½ feet in diameter, 18 feet long, and weighed 7 tons. It is fine-grained and takes a glassy smooth finish.

This wood originated from a small, sparsely inhabited island off the east coast of New Guinea. Some of these trees grow to enormous dimensions. One of the first logs we received from here was 3 ½ feet in diameter, 18 feet long, and weighed 7 tons. It is fine-grained and takes a glassy smooth finish. Most of these pieces have a ‘marble-cake’ look to the end grain that is outstanding.

The heartwood of Tasmanian Blackwood is a golden-brown to reddish-brown color, oftentimes with darker streaks. It is extremely lustrous and takes a beautiful, smooth finish. It is a very close match to Koa and the type of figuring is similar.

Another true rosewood. The wood is beautifully variegated with different shades of purple and darker stripes. The specific gravity is up to 1.2 so it is hard and heavy. Used for inlays and bandings, turnery, fancy furniture parts, and musical instrument accessories. These fingerboards are all quartersawn.

This rare Brazilian Tulipwood look-a-like is a true Dalbergia species and like many others in the genus it has flashy color, an aromatic smell, is fairly hard and heavy, and is very stable in use.
