European Pearwood
(Pyrus communis)

click on photo for close-up and back view

The wild pear of Europe is considered the source of the cultivated varieties found throughout the world. It is usually a small to medium-sized tree 12-18 inch diameter and 30-40 feet in height, but trees up to 3 feet in diameter and 60 feet in height are on record. Most of the timber that is imported into the United States is from old orchards. In Germany especially pear trees were widely planted along the roads into small towns and villages and the fruit used to make schnapps to warm up those long, dark winter evenings. But, owing to the popularity of the wood these tree-lined roads are mostly just memories.
Almost all Pearwood imported into the U.S.A. has been steamed to bring out a more pinkish-red color and to prevent drying stresses. The sapwood is undifferentiated from the heartwood. In some older trees there might be a core of darker colored wood. The wood has a fine, uniform texture and weighs 45-50 lbs/cu.ft. Occasional logs yield curly or a mottled roey figure. Formerly the wood was used for carving, turning, drawing instruments, wood engravings, textile printing blocks, and tool handles. Stained black it is an excellent substitute for Ebony. Contemporary uses include woodwinds such as recorders, furniture, kitchen and other cabinetry, and architectural uses such as paneling and doors. Even with the small defect at one end this board is an exemplary specimen.
